Rural communities have a number of ways in which they sustain their existence. Our commission starts from the premise that ICTs could usefully be utilised in order to support activities which communities typically engage in to sustain themselves and generate income on an ongoing basis.

Our approach is to investigate and to develop frameworks as well as specific projects on the possible sustainable application of ICTs in rural communities for the generation and enhancement of economic opportunities. The intended outcome for the application of these ICTs is the generation of income, improvement of efficiency, access to new markets, increase of competitiveness and ultimately reduction of poverty, thereby improvement of standard of living.

The two projects that are proposed in this investigation are:

  • Project 1 - Rural-Urban cooperatives/CBOs electronic trading hub
  • Project 2 - Creation of e-market places to enable access to new markets for community based tourism projects
